Jude Law is the blogger in Contagion, a movie that “spreads a lethal airborne virus” in every cinema – he tells in his blog the “true story” of labs that work together with government to hide real information from the people.

The movies is astonishing in one aspect: many good actors die or are about to die in the very beginning:Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet and so on.

A person that doesn´t want to be bothered by the journalist blogger tells that blog is not a serious thing, it is just a grafitti with punctuation… Quite interesting to think about the blogs effect on people and the virus spread, and also the lack of credibility of the blogger versus the lies of Government and scientists.

You can use it in education, specially for 10-12 yrs old students, in order to impress them with the contagion possibilities for no good hygienic habits. It really can impress students.

Jude Law é o blogger em Contágio, um filme sobre “um virus letal no ar” que se espalha em cada cinema – ele diz em seu blog a “verdadeira história” de laboratórios que trabalham em conjunto com o governo para esconder informações reais do povo.

O filme é surpreendente em um aspecto: bons atores morrem ou estão prestes a morrer mesmo no início do filme: Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet e assim por diante.

Uma pessoa que não quer ser incomodada pelo jornalista blogueiro diz que blog não é uma coisa séria, é apenas um graffiti com pontuação … O filme é interessante para pensar sobre o efeito dos blogs sobre as pessoas X a propagação do vírus, e também a falta de credibilidade do blogueiro X as mentiras do governo e dos cientistas.

O filme é interessante para o uso na educação, especialmente para estudantes de 10 a 12 anos. Realmente sairão impressionados sobre os efeitos de não manterem  hábitos higiênicos como lavar as mãos, etc.

Agora, no primeiro ano da 2a década do Século XXI é o momento certo para falar de um cinema movido a energia solar. Pode acomodar 8 adultos para assistirem um filme. Comédias, vídeos de música e curtas sobre temas ambientais. Feliz 2011 e dê uma olhadinha no link acima.

It reminded me about Operation Valkyrie (2004) with Tom Cruise as Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg, that tried to place a bomb where Hitler would make a conference. And also, it reminded me about Tom Cruise in Rio, where astonished Brazilians yelled to death to celebrate his stay in our country. He was a famous man. Not only for his movies but for his kindness with his audience. Despite some mistakes as thanking journalists with “gracias” (Spanish word) and also talking about our music as samba (correct) and tango (incorrect), he was very kind to eveyone. A good example of fame built on a solid career and not on empty midia actions. Watch this documentary on the interview he gave to Brazilian journalists.

Ouviu falar do filme Bruno, o novo filme de Baron Cohen? Claro, é uma comédia e também subversivo como foi Borat. O protagonista é um gay austríaco ligado à moda, e que começa uma viagem para Hollywood, tentando ressuscitar sua carreira, enquanto busca a fama, pela fama – como tantos fazem hoje em dia. Parece que está sendo lançado este mês nos Estados Unidos. Se você souber mais sobre o filme por favor nos conte. Amei Borat.

Adam Sandler’s character (George Simmons) has destroyed all of his relationships. He cheated on his lover and abandoned his family. All he has left are fellow famous celebrities that he hangs with occasionally. With a terminal disease expected to take its course on him, it has become time to make sense of his life.

We should be used to make balances of  life. Time is passing so nervously and chalenges coming so sudden in today world. A movie to talk about life balance… with fun together. And a good cast: Adam Snadler, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana and so on. The trailer shows an interesting script and performance. Let´s check the film.

A morte nos rodeia. O filme 2012 provavelmente irá revelar isso de forma bem clara. Enquanto ele não vem, pense no filme Funny People (ainda sem tradução, ao que eu saiba), a ser lançado nos Estados Unidos em 31 de julho e no Brasil, talvez na primavera. O filme é sobre um comediante que descobre que ele está com uma doença terminal e como ele lida com a situação: relacionamentos, amigos, ciúmes e todas essas coisas que afetam o ser humano e que nos permitem amadurecer e aprender.

O personagem de Adam Sandler (George Simmons) destruiu todos os seus relacionamentos. Traiu seu amor e abandonou sua família. Com uma doença terminal se desenvolvendo, ele quer dar um sentido para sua vida.

A gente deveria ir se acostumando a fazer balanço de vida. O tempo está passando tão nervosamente e há tantos desafios que surgem do nada, hoje, que o tema é atualíssimo. Um filme para falar disso… com diversão. E um bom elenco: Adam Snadler, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana e assim por diante. O trailer mostra um roteiro interessante e bom desempenho. Vamos verificar o filme.

Hello from Norway,

I read your list of Brazilian movies with great interest. As a collector of movies from all continents of the world, I have also gathered some from your country. But living in Norway, it is not easy to get relevant information about what is produced. Some very few are shown at the cinema here – or on our national TV channels. Nevertheless, I try to learn more from internet, and from my few friends in Brazil. Therefore, my comments to your list must clearly be judged as an outsider’s look:

The 60s: My first meeting with the cinema of your country was through the movies of the great Glauber Rocha. It was a breathtaking experience. I have 3 of his films in my collection, that you also mention: Deus E O Diabo Na Terra Do Sol (1964), Terra Em Transe (1966) and O Dragao Da Maldade Contra Santo Guerreiro (1969).

The 70s: Unfortunately, this is a blank decade in my collection.

The 80s: My rediscovery of the Brazilian movie, is due to Hector Babenco and his movies Pixote: A Lei Do Mais Fraco (1981) and O Beijo Da Mulher Aranha (1985). Later he went to New York to make Ironweed (1987).

The 90s: For me this was the decade I got to know Walter Salles and his movies: Terra Estrangeira (1996) and his famous Central Do Brasil (1998).

My Brazilian movies from after millenium: Walter Salles: Abril Despedacado (2001), Diarios De Motocicleta (2003) and Dark Water (2005 – filmed in Los Angeles), Fernando Meirelles: Cidade De Deus (2002) and Constant Gardener (2005 – filmed in Berlin), Karim Aïnouz: Madame Satã (2002), Sergio Machado: Cidade Baixa (2005) and Andrucha Waddington: Casa De Areia (2005).

I am aware that these movies are amongst the most published and marketed internationally and that they might not be representative of Brazilian filmmaking as such. This is why I like to learn more, also from other parts of your film industry. My problem is only that I need english subtitles, since I still have not learned the portuguese language…

Our comments:

During the 70s, Brazil movies faced a strong censorship on art production in general (caused by military dictatorship) and a large incentive to foreigner movies.The fresh air came with Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos (Bruno Barreto) despite suffering a strong censorship too.

In the beginning of the 80s, you must consider also Eu Te Amo (Arnaldo Jabor), another good movie that surprised people with its quality and casting performance: Sonia Braga, Vera Fischer and Tarcisio Meira.

You really have to add O Quatrilho (Fabio Barreto, and brother of Bruno Barreto) in your list of the 90s. It is a delicious movie on a special phase our country lived, divided among foreign influence of immigrants (Italians, germans etc) and also tighted to the Portuguese influence (moral, religion and so on). Watch this one for me, my friend.

Walter Salles, on the other hand, was the good thing from the 90s, as you have noticed. Central do Brasil, launched in 1998 had a nominee to Oscar prize and although not conquering it, it has received important prizes as Urso de Prata (Berlin), Bafta and Globo de Ouro.

I would add Tropa de Elite for this after millennium period but I must outline that you have an excellent vision of Brazilian filmography. My heart is full of joy for the information we have shared here. Thank you for your comments that I had to transform in this new post on the subject, for its quality and unique approach.

Her life is full of vigorous situations: mother-of-five, abuse of power, unconventional jobs including sports reporter and commercial fisherman, political career and so on.

The thing is she is probably a good subject for a movie script. Who applies for it?

Two significant scenes. The first one – Mike is driving over a bridge when he is transformed in Mark, a 17 yrs boy. The bridge is a good symbol of his life – he does not cross over it – always regretting the splendid life he had at his 17´s, when his girlfriend told him she was pregnant and he decided to abandon everything to marry her. The second one – Mark is in a corridor (birth tunnel?) when he is back as Mike, the adult father of Maggie and Alex, married to Scarlett. Is he born again? The scene indicates he is sorry about his mistakes with his wife and teenage children, but he does not seem to have changed.

The movie shows a scenario that a lot of people are experiencing: adults that miss their previous lives, and do no consolidate the options and ways they have chosen in the present life. Despite classified as a teen movie, it is an amazing experience for grown ups.

Take care if you feel ok with the movie. Despite it is funny and has a good direction, it is a movie on a character that is not a real grown up, even after his 17 back again.

Este filme, sobre um marido e pai displicente, que sonha com a vida que teria se não tivesse abandonado os estudos e a carreira esportiva para atender sua namorada grávida, abre a possibilidade de um retorno ao passado para rever decisões. Mike, o marido, transforma-se em Mark, um jovem de 17 anos, bem sucedido e autoconfiante.

Duas cenas significantes para melhor compreender o filme. A primeira, Mike está dirigindo sobre uma ponte quando se transforma no garoto de 17 anos que tinha sido. A ponte é um excelente símbolo de sua vida: não a cruza, indeciso entre a realidade e seu sonho. A segunda cena é aquela em que Mark se transforma no adulto Mike, novamente. Ele está em um corredor (túnel onde renasce?). Voltará como adulto responsável? O filme acena que sim, mas, na simbologia, mostra que não. Não se entusiasme muito se você se sentir identificado com o personagem. Provavelmente ele continuará como um adulto que não cresceu, que não cruzou a ponte.
